Why regulators are acting
Respirable crystalline silica released during cutting, grinding, and polishing of conventional engineered stone is now one of the most heavily regulated hazards in the surfaces industry. Australia's prohibition on engineered stone containing crystalline silica set the precedent, and specifiers in the EU and North America are seeing steadily stricter exposure limits and documentation requirements.
For architects, the practical consequence is simple: any surface containing significant crystalline silica now carries specification risk, program risk, and liability risk on commercial projects.
What counts as compliant
Compliance is demonstrated at two levels. First, the material itself: inorganic-bonded quartz with single-digit silica content, or fully silica-free crystallized glass, supported by a current laboratory declaration. Second, the fabrication chain: dust-controlled cutting, water suppression, and documented worker protection.
Ask suppliers for three documents on every project: a silica content declaration, a fire classification report where accent walls are involved, and a fabrication safety statement covering off-site cutting.
Specifying without compromising design
The objection we hear most often is aesthetic: will compliant alternatives match the veining and depth of the natural marbles they replace? Modern inorganic quartz carries full-body veining through fired mineral bodies, and super nano crystallized glass delivers a pure white ground that resin-based quartz cannot hold outdoors.
Write the specification around performance criteria, fire rating, UV stability, water absorption, and declared silica content, rather than brand names. Compliant products will meet the numbers; non-compliant ones will eliminate themselves.

| Surface family | Typical silica content | UV stability | Accent-wall suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional resin quartz | High (approx. 90%) | Yellows outdoors | Not recommended |
| Eco-inorganic quartz | Low single digits | Colorfast | Suitable, A1 options |
| Super nano crystallized glass | Silica-free | Colorfast | Suitable, A1 options |
